Do You Know Shelley Munro? (contest)

Hi, my name is Shelley Munro and I’m a frustrated cat owner.
Let me explain. Cats love my husband and always make a beeline for him if he meets them at a friend’s house, but he doesn’t like them back. In fact, I’d go so far as to say the next door neighbor’s cat and my husband have an ongoing war about trespassing in the vegetable patch. Don’t tell my husband, but I think the cat is winning.
Luckily I’m an equal opportunity pet owner and I find a dog an acceptable alternative. We adopted our current dog Bella from the Humane Society. She’s a real bundle of energy and we both love her to bits.
But back to cats. I decided one day that if I couldn’t own a cat, there was nothing to stop me writing about the species. After pondering the matter and doing a little research, I settled on black leopards and wrote an entire series about them. Take that, Mr. Munro!
My choice of black leopards came after I read a story in the local paper about sightings of a large mystery cat in the South Island. The story fascinated me, and continues to interest me since there are still occasional sightings. Some people say there is a leopard living out in the wild while others scoff at the idea, because we don’t have big cats in New Zealand—not unless they’re in a zoo. I like to believe the stories, although I hope I never come face-to-face with one!

Leopards are interesting cats. Here are some facts about the big cats.

1. Leopards are solitary cats and usually only seek out other leopards in order to mate.
2. They hunt at night and sleep in trees during the day.
3. They’re excellent climbers and often haul their kills up into trees.
4. Leopards are found in many different habitats and countries.
5. Their spots make for excellent camouflage.
6. They are built for short bursts of speed, and their jaws and strong build help them take down big animals.
7. Black leopards are called panthers in some countries. They still have spots but they blend into the leopard’s coat.

Changing of the WIPs

So I got a response to the email I sent my editor that I hadn’t told anyone about. To be honest, I was trying not to think about it too much myself over the past few days. But, unfortunately, the response means a change to my writing schedule and therefore requires an explanation to ya’ll. In short, I asked if the sequel to They Call Me Death could still be submitted once I finished re-revising it. By the way, it’s been re-titled from Much More Than Human to Releasing the Animal Within. While I was asking, I also mentioned my first Archangel story that I had previously submitted for an anthology call. The answer to both was a heartbreaking NO.
What does this mean exactly? Well, it means I had to decide on whether to finish these to manuscripts now, when I already have file upon file of other submittable work, or move on. To be honest, I need to move on…for now. I am in no way giving up on either Emily or Zerachial (my Archangel). However, I’m going to shelve both for a little while. I’ve decided I need to concentrate on books I can actually submit to one of my publishers so they might make it to your waiting hands. You may wonder, why not just try another publisher or self-publish? I am actually looking into a couple of other publishers where I think I can be happy. I’m VERY picky when it comes to publishers and to be honest, Samhain and EC have spoiled me for quite a few others.
As for the self-publishing thing, well…I keep going back and forth on that but for now am still not seriously considering it. So in short, I do plan to write my ass off every chance I get this year, but am moving on from what I’ve been working on for the past couple of months. If you were hoping for another shifter story don’t worry. Next up is Kotori’s book and it’s going well. I haven’t finished it yet but will post regular updates on my progress.

I’ve Been Remiss…

When I started this blog it was my intention to add a new post weekly. Anyone who has followed thus far knows that hasn’t happened. I apologize to anyone who feels lacking in my weekly rants, but fear not. I’m on vacation this week and might find something to add later on. Mid-Nano Blues

Tomorrow is the Ides of November and halfway through NaNoWriMo 2010. I confess I’ve already considered throwing in the towel a couple of times now, but I think I’ll keep on going. I’m currently at 5,016 words on my official Nano manuscript, but I’ve actually written more than that in the past week. My problem is the other WIP that I have on my handy-dandy flash drive just won’t leave me alone. I open my Nano MS and the other characters start screaming at me. Most vocal this past week have been Kotori and his woman Sanura. What can I say? I miss my shifters. The urge to get  lost in that world has been nearly overwhelming lately, so I opened up my previously published short stories.
In case you’ve missed them on my site, there are free short stories set my shifter world, based on minor characters. One is about Scott, the human co-worker of Alexia Williams. The other is about Fleur and Philip, lion shapeshifters not mentioned in They Call Me Death. I feel I’ve neglected my other blogs lately and rectified that by posting the free stories to them today. The humans got Scott’s story and the shifters got the lions. I hope to make this a regular thing, maybe monthly. As I said I miss my shifters.
So here’s the run-down on my writing:

  • Nano MS: 5,016 words and drifting
  • Vampire MS: 27,548 and hopefull
  • Kotori’s MS: 6,371 and full speed ahead

Of course, there are quite a few others in the works as well, but I refuse to open those for updates until at least one of these three is finished!
